It has started to rain on and off since last evening in Binsar. This further reduces any risk of a repeat fire. Since the rains began, the smoke around Binsar has also settled down. We have not had any smoke at the Retreat itself for a few days now. But the view has opened up a bit since the rain.
We are all praying for more rain. While the trigger for the fires is almost certainly human – carelessness (burning of fields after harvest or not putting out an open fire) or deliberate (there was a motor-cyclist who was seen starting a fire in 3 – 4 places today) – the fire surely found an ally in the excessively dry forests this year. There hasn’t been any serious rain since last August – El Nino and global warming to blame, perhaps? Let there be rain; we can live in darkness for a few nights.
